Old Town
Dubrovnik in March is beautiful. Today I spent time in the 'Old City' part of Dubrovnik. It was a leisurely day wandering the old part of the city filled with rich history. As I walked through the main street of Stradun, I saw hundreds of children all dressed in costumes, fried eggs, Legos, snowflakes, angry birds, witches, washing machines and more... Oh my goodness, they were so creative and so much fun to watch them go to the front of the plaza and do their presentations. Exciting to watch the youth.. they will grow up and learn about all the facts that I just discovered and more. There was a terrible war here. Not too long ago. Not many visible remnants left, and people do not talk about it. My guide told me she was five at the time and her family, specifically her father sent the family to Germany. He stayed behind to fight and survived. Some of her family and friends did not survive, and I saw pictures on the memorial walls of one of them and the last photo one relative took of the city burning before he died.
The backdrop to all of this is the beautiful Adriatic Sea and the historic buildings that have withstood previous attempts. The people here have been kind and welcoming since my visit and have graciously obliged my questions about the town's history. There is a lot of history here. I feel humbled. I see how the passing of time has healed a country.
The picture above is one I took on the narrow streets. It is the feeling I am left with from my time wandering the streets today.
